What's the difference between H, J, and L track lighting?

We sell a type of track lighting called H-style 3-wire track lighting. It's important to note that our track lighting system will only work with this specific style. To determine what type of track system you have, please refer to the diagram below.

Different types of track lighting can be difficult to distinguish from one another. Narrow down the type by seeing how many wires the track has. L- and J-tracks have two wires. H-tracks have three.

It's crucial to understand that the three types of track lighting parts are not interchangeable. They can only be used within their respective types:

  • H-track parts are compatible only with other H-track pieces.
  • J-track parts are designed to work together, and the same goes for L-track pieces.

When choosing parts for your track lighting system, it's recommended to stick with a single model. Even small variations across different model can lead to fitting problems.

If you're having trouble finding the right parts for your existing track lighting system, here are some tips that might help:

  • Take a photo of your track and light heads to show to a professional who can assist you.
  • If you're shopping in person, consider bringing a track light head with you to ensure compatibility.
